The
Classic Brown is Canadian artist Stacey Brown and a rotating cast of
musicians. Her first EP was produced by John Crossingham (of Raising the
Fawn, and Broken Social Scene) on a 4-track in a Toronto basement. Though
the master was lost, the rough-cut Ep was released in limited edition in
handicraft packages to happy accolades:
Let it be known that I am an official Classic Brown fan. The sweet,
introspective, observant lyrics, acoustic strumming, and
finger-painting-with-electronics were just too much for me to handle. I
gave in after the first listen. Throw in the fact that this EP is a
self-released effort and I'm completely helpless. Ryan, Delusions of

Where most artists seem to regurgitate everything they love about their
favorite band/artist, Brown is clever and rather than copy or imitate she
creates her own style. If youre looking for an easy comparison much like,
The Classic Brown sounds like its not that simple. Lesley Benchina, Bedlam
Society
The current roster of The Classic Brown features ex-Secession Movement
guitarist/ vocalist David Downham, Steve Poponi and David Dunn (all
currently of New Jerseys Up Up Down Down).
Down with Fun was recorded over the course of three years, during which
time the studio relocated, Dave and Stacey married and Stacey relocated to
South Jersey the home of Gradwell House Recording Studio, owned and
operated by Downham and Poponi.
Canadian CD release shows were performed in Toronto and St. Catharines in
October 2006. The reviews so far have been promising. Down with Fun was
included in Driven magazine’s “eight to listen to…” along with Beck, Bob
Dylan, Be Your Own Pet, TV on the Radio and Justin Timberlake.
Don’t let The Classic Brown’s name fool you; Stacey Brown’s music is
colourful, creative, energetic, lush and beautiful. Jordy Yack, Pulse
Magazine
Brown’s vocals remind me of the soft sound of Amy Millan from Stars. Like
Millan, Brown sounds girly and sweet without the syrup or any hint of
punk. The result is a voice that you want to listen to whether she’s
singing about love or war and backed by a full orchestra or just one
guitar.... The only thing keeping Brown away from a record deal is
probably the fact that she hasn’t even tried to get one. Lisa Town,
